CRL Energy Ltd is an energy, minerals, and environmental research and consulting company, we offer technical services in minerals exploration programme management, geological mapping and 3D modelling, resource evaluation and certification, hydrogeology, coal seam gas content analysis, mine drainage treatment and site remediation, combustion carbonisation and gasification, and air emissions and stack testing.
CRL Energy’s Government-supported (MBIE) research programmes include environmental protocols for coal and mineral mining, coal gasification, clean energy production from coal and biomass, and coal-based nanomaterials.
A comprehensive range of coal, minerals, and water analytical services is offered from laboratories in Gracefield, Christchurch, Greymouth, Westport and Hamilton.
CRL Energy have just opened a new joint-venture spontaneous-combustion laboratory in Brisbane (CB3), which is a core capability in a new Mine Services business. With customers from across Australia and the US, CB3 offers spontaneous combustion testing as well as expertise on gas, ventilation, dust and friction ignition hazards in mines. Research underpinning this is supported by the Coal Association and Callaghan Innovation.
CRL Energy is a Telarc Registered Supplier to ISO9001 and we have IANZ accreditation for much of our testing services. Our chemical laboratories and energy test centres provide a solid practical basis for all our work.
Our main laboratories, test facilities and library are on the Science Campus at Gracefield, Lower Hutt, New Zealand. We also have in New Zealand:
- Geology, hydrology, and environmental teams based at our Christchurch office;
- An environmental team in Hamilton based on the Ruakura Science Campus;
- A coal and water testing laboratory, and mine geology service in Greymouth; and
- Coal and mine geology services in Westport to service the Buller Region.
Ownership
CRL Energy Ltd is a company formed under the 1993 Companies Act, New Zealand. As of July 2008, CRL Energy Ltd is owned by the Coal Association of New Zealand Inc.
History
CRL Energy was established on 1 January 1995 as a commercial venture to provide science and technology services to New Zealand's energy production and utilization industries.
CRL Energy provides analytical, R&D, consulting, testing, surveying, and information services to the coal and energy industries. It has a core staff of 47 people.
CRL Energy was formed from the existing staff and facilities of the Coal Research Association of New Zealand which had been providing services to the coal industry for 27 years.
