CRL Energy is an energy and environmental research and consulting company, with specialist knowledge in new energy technologies such as hydrogen and biomass conversion and a strong history in all aspects of fossil fuel energy, particularly coal-related research. We offer research, consultancy and testing in the areas of exploration and mining, fuel quality and use, and environmental monitoring.

CRL Energy’s Foundation for Research, Science and Technology-funded research programme includes coal gasification, carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) and hydrogen production from coal, and environmental protocols for coal and mineral mining.

CRL Energy research is not limited to coal, with projects on bioenergy, and low enthalpy geothermal utilisation. CRL Energy is part of the EnergyScape programme into future energy pathways led by NIWA and in collaboration with GNS, IRL and Scion. CRL Energy has been collaborating with BRANZ for a number of years on household energy demand research. We have on-going research contracts with the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology, Technology New Zealand, Energy Federation of New Zealand, World Energy Council, and the New Zealand coal industry.

CRL Energy is a Telarc Registered Supplier to ISO9001 and we have IANZ accreditation for much of our testing services. Our chemical laboratories and energy test centres provide a solid practical basis for all our work.

Our main laboratories, test facilities and library are on the Science Campus at Gracefield, Lower Hutt, New Zealand. We also have in New Zealand:

A geology and hydrology team based at our Christchurch office in Riccarton;
An environmental team in Hamilton based on the Ruakura Science Campus; and
A coal and water testing laboratory, and mine geology service in Greymouth.

Ownership

CRL Energy Ltd is a company formed under the 1993 Companies Act, New Zealand. As of July 2008, CRL Energy Ltd is owned 50% by the Coal Association of New Zealand Inc, and 50% by Genesis Power Ltd, trading as Genesis Energy.
