CLIMATE CHANGE

We have an excellent reputation in providing a wide range of climate-related services such as research, consultancy and education.

The New Zealand Government ratified the Kyoto Protocol in December 2002. By ratifying the Protocol the government has agreed to reduce New Zealand's greenhouse gas emissions to their Kyoto Protocol target, which is based on 1990 emissions. The target under which New Zealand has agreed to at Kyoto, based on national greenhouse gas emissions inventories for the first commitment period (2008 - 2012) is 365 million tonnes CO2 equivalent. However according to a business as usual scenario New Zealand's actual greenhouse gas emissions will be 14 - 20% higher than this target.

In order to meet this target the Government is introducing a climate change policy that may include a carbon charge.

Climate Change has therefore become an issue that will have an impact on all New Zealanders, and especially businesses.

Consultancy Services

CRL Energy undertakes a wide variety of work in the climate change consultancy and research area.

Energy Efficiency Resource Assessment Model and Database (EERA)

EERA is an energy efficiency tool that highlights energy efficiency opportunities. It can quantify and compare energy and greenhouse gas savings of efficiency improvements and their economic viability.

Climate Change Policy Update

The New Zealand Government ratified the Kyoto Protocol in December 2002. In order to meet its Kyoto Protocol target the government has developed a climate change policy which will lead to opportunities and costs for New Zealand businesses.

Current Research Projects
The Clean Development Mechanism and Business Opportunities

In the not too distant future it is likely that there will be a global climate policy regime in which firms will have to work within a low carbon system. There will be new developing markets for carbon trading and also opportunities in markets for green technologies. Companies that enter into these new markets will be taking some risks but they will also benefit strategically in learning and understanding these new markets and positioning themselves for the new and developing international markets.

New Zealand is at a crossroads in the promotion and development of climate change business opportunities. The Government ratified the Kyoto Protocol in December 2002. This has far reaching implications for the possible acceleration and utilisation of climate change business opportunities in New Zealand. There is also the issue of whether New Zealand will miss out on those opportunities with few companies in New Zealand understanding the Kyoto Protocol Mechanisms and the opportunities they present.
