The New Zealand Government’s investment in a four-year research project 'Hydrogen and Clean Energy', commissioned in 2008, is being jointly undertaken by CRL Energy and IRL (who are developing the electrolyser component of the technology package), with collaboration from the University of Canterbury.
The project aims to create the technological platform required to allow New Zealand to develop new energy technologies to help New Zealand meet the challenges of global climate change and peak oil.
The intention is to develop a new process technology based on the integration of co-fired coal-biomass gasification and a new electrolyser system design for co-production of hydrogen plus syngas for Fischer-Tropsch production.
A programme governance panel includes senior industry representatives from Solid Energy, Methanex NZ Ltd, and BP New Zealand.
