PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF OILS AND GREASES

SOAP (Spectrographic Oil Analysis Program)

The following analyses are available, and can be undertaken in any combination:

  • Kinematic Viscosity at 100°C (cSt)
  • Kinematic Viscosity at 40°C (cSt)
  • Fuel Dilution (%)
  • Total Base Number (mg KOH/g)
  • Total Acid Number (mg KOH/g)
  • Water (% or ppm)
  • Soot (%)
  • Free Chloride (ppm)
  • Wear Metals (Al, Ag, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Mg, Mn, Na, Pb, Si, Sn, Ti)
  • Oxidation Index
  • Nitration Index

Three typical analysis schedules are shown below:

Engine schedule

Kinematic Viscosity at 100°C (cSt), Fuel Dilution (%), Total Base Number (mg KOH/g), Soot (%), Water (%), and Wear Metals.

Gearbox schedule

Kinematic Viscosity at 40°C (cSt), Total Acid Number (mg KOH/g), Water (%), Oxidation Index, Nitration Index, and Wear Metals.

Refrigeration schedule

Kinematic Viscosity at 40°C (cSt), Total Acid Number (mg KOH/g), Free Chloride (ppm), Water (ppm), and Wear Metals.

Sample preparation

Oil samples received for physical and chemical analysis are thoroughly mixed before analysis.
