TRACE ELEMENT ANALYSIS OF LUBRICATING OILS AND GREASES

Method

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry

Most elements, from sodium to uranium, are determined in hydrocarbons using X-ray spectrometry at levels as low as 1 mg/kg.

Sample preparation

Oil samples received for analysis of wear metal and other trace elements are thoroughly mixed and converted to solid solutions using a unique procedure developed by SpectraChem Analytical.

Elements analysed

Programs are currently available for the determination of nineteen trace elements in oils and greases on a routine basis, and a number of other elements on a case by case basis. To view a layout of these elements, click here.

Quality assurance

Calibration of individual elements in oils over wide concentration ranges is carried out using over 60 'Conostan' metallo-organic standard reference oils in accordance with the requirements of International Accreditation New Zealand - ISO 17025.
